Friday 10:00 - 10:45 |
| Doug Phillips | A Homeschool Vision of Victory (Eq Arena) |
| If a generation is to rise up and call America back to its biblical foundations, it must surely come from the ranks of America's homeschoolers. But home education is not an end in itself. It is only a God-ordained means of accomplishing His purposes in the home, in the heart of a young person, and in society as a whole. Doug will discuss the historical significance of the homeschool movement, the true objectives of home education and the importance of a long-term multi-generational vision of victory. This inspirational session is for everyone who needs to be reminded of the beauty and greatness of the homeschool vision. |
| Turansky and Miller | Developing Honesty in Children (Eq Barn) |
| Dishonesty takes on different forms, including lying, cheating, stealing, and being mischievous. Even children who don't struggle with these problems need to understand the truth. What is the difference between teasing and lying? Is it okay to say something that's not true in order to protect a person's feelings? The answers to these and many other questions provide parents with ammunition to deal with one of the most challenging threats to a relationship, lack of honesty. |
| Bruce Shortt | Two Enlightenment Lies: Columbus and the Flat Earth and the "Persecution" of Galileo (EH1) |
| The left always attempts to discredit its opponents by resorting to smears. One of the familiar allegations by the left against Christianity is that not only are Christians against science, they have persecuted scientists and have stood in the way of progress. In particular, the "flat earth myth" and the story of the "persecution" of Galileo are two familiar smears against Christianity that are so entrenched that they even find their way into some Christian writings. The truth may surprise you. |
| Aaron Watson | Changing Lives to Change the World (EH2) |
| In a culture plagued by apathy and tolerance, attempting to raise a generation of world changers is an uphill battle. The competence of our youth is limited to video games, rebellion, and irresponsibility. In this workshop, Aaron will show teenagers and those around them that impacting culture is not an activity beyond their capacity. |
| Jay Wile | Teaching Critical Thinking (EH3) |
| One of the biggest failures of our public and private school systems is that they do not teach students how to think critically. In this seminar, Dr. Wile gives you specific suggestions as to how you can teach your child to think critically, regardless of the subject matter. You will learn how to help your student evaluate statements, look for hidden assumptions, find political/social agendas, and discover faulty logic. Although Dr. Wile's area of interest is science, he will show you how critical thinking applies to all academic areas, as well as all facets of your life. |
| Jim Mason | Religious Freedom in Pennsylvania (EH4) |
| An overview and update on the litigation challenging Pennsylvania's homeschool law because it infringes on parents' religious freedom. |
| Diana Waring | Designer Genes - Part One (Teen Track) (VIP Room) |
| Based on the concept that God has personally and uniquely designed each one of us, Diana shares the amazing truth that we have DESIGNER genes - and not a single one of us is average! We are designed by God in a marvelously intricate way. Though we can not reduce our understanding of design to a simple, no-brainer, fit-everyone-into-a-box explanation, we can recognize similarities in how people learn. We are going to interactively consider ways of understanding and honoring God's design in each learner as we examine learning modalities, learning styles, and intelligences. |
Friday 11:00 - 11:45 |
| Richard "Little Bear" Wheeler | Kooky Kids, "Kowabunga!": The "Little Bear" Story (Eq Arena) |
| Do you have a child that baffles you, and you think, "Only the Lord knows what will become of him or her?" If there's any comfort in company, I have one of those kooky kids, too. And what's more, I was one! Allow me to share my own testimony of how God could use a Crockett-loving, gopher-skinning, "retarded" boy and create a national ministry that has reached thousands through the vehicle of Mantle Ministries. This message is designed to assure parents that the Lord can direct the interests of our children and use them to His glory. Very inspirational for parents with "irregular" children. |
| Mary Schofield | High School Overview (Eq Barn) |
| How do you decide what to study in high school? How do you know that your teen is learning enough (and of the right things)? How can parents continue a homeschool lifestyle during the high school years? Must homeschool students model their high school years after the institutionalized educational style of learning? Come and learn how to make your high school years special, wonderful, and complete as we discuss the overall plans needed to teach high school at home. |
| Rick Boyer | What's a Dad to Do? (EH1) |
| There are plenty of misconceptions about the role of the father in a homeschooling family. Some people think that if he can't be at home during "school time," he can't be involved. Others think his job is to take over some of Mom's chores in order to free her to spend more time with the children. But Scripture gives seven functions of a father in a godly home, and each of these can be applied very practically and powerfully in home education. Enjoy the wisdom and humor of this presentation as Rick answers the question of "What's a Dad to Do?" |
| Maggie Hogan | A Wife's Priorities: For Women Only, Please (EH2) |
| Ladies, how can we support, encourage and equip our husbands to be the best homeschooling dads and husbands they can be? What's the secret behind successful dads? Using Biblical examples, real-life anecdotes, tips and techniques that work, and a sense of humor, Maggie shares ways to build up and support the "Principal" at home. This workshop could revitalize your entire homeschool! Don't miss it. (Husbands - this is where you want your wife to be.) |
| Kevin Kanoff | Homeschool Sports (EH3) |
| Discussion of the benefits and pitfalls of organized homeschool sports. Should Christ centered homeschool families participate in organized sports and in what setting? |
| Susan Kemmerer | Enjoying Homeschool - An Oxymoron? (EH4) |
| It's the start of another homeschooling day - and a Monday at that! You want to turn off the alarm and duck back under the covers. Do you find yourself hardly able to drag yourself out of bed in the mornings as you face the coming day with dread? Do you feel like a failure? This homeschool thing certainly doesn't seem to be working the miracles you were led to expect. Rediscover the contagious fruit of JOY, and watch it grow in your homeschool. |
| Diana Waring | Designer Genes - Part Two (Teen Track) (VIP Room) |
| Based on the concept that God has personally and uniquely designed each one of us, Diana shares the amazing truth that we have DESIGNER genes - and not a single one of us is average! We are designed by God in a marvelously intricate way. Though we can not reduce our understanding of design to a simple, no-brainer, fit-everyone-into-a-box explanation, we can recognize similarities in how people learn. We are going to interactively consider ways of understanding and honoring God's design in each learner as we examine learning modalities, learning styles, and intelligences. |
Friday 12:00-12:45 |
| Doug Phillips | The Promise: The Beauty and Power of the Fifth Commandment (Eq Arena) |
| Is it well with your soul? The Scriptures say that being "well" and honoring your father and mother are inextricably linked. "Honor your father and mother" is the first command with a promise. It is a promise linked with spiritual and physical prosperity, including long life. Yet this foundational command is largely ignored and resented by teenagers and adults alike. As a young man, Doug purposed before the Lord to make it a life goal to honor his parents. In this foundational talk, Doug addresses challenging issues like: How do wise parents instill honor in their children? What does the Bible say about the way we are to respond to perverse authority in parents? In what way are adult sons and daughters to honor their living parents? What are the consequences for dishonoring parents? How does our culture promote dishonor? Why do children who never learn to honor their parents consistently experience failure in marriage and business? How can adult children restore honor to relationships that have long been tinged by dishonor? |
| Turansky and Miller | Teaching Kids to Respond Well to Correction (Eq Barn) |
| Many children don't know how to respond well to correction. After all, correction is one of the tools for learning. Instead many children blame, defend, rationalize and justify their behavior. Furthermore, many parents view correction as an interruption to their lives, not realizing the teaching opportunities present. When parents have a plan for correction, they can help children develop good patterns that result in a clear and strong conscience. |
| Bruce Shortt | Christianity and the Founding (EH1) |
| The postmodern left rejects the notion of absolute truth, and therefore the idea of historical truth. Instead of truth, claim the postmoderns, all we can have are "useful narratives." One of the highest priorities of postmodern "historians" has been to bury the truth about the Christian roots of America's founding and replace it with a narrative congenial to advancing secular humanism. |
| Kathy Kuhl | Homeschooling Your Child with Learning or Attention Difficulties (EH2) |
| Training in Diligence and Thoroughness How do you prepare to homeschool a child who has difficulty learning and paying attention? Does this child need to be evaluated for learning problems? Learn about resources to help you, mistakes to avoid, how to keep your child going, and how to keep yourself going, too. Whether you are only considering homeschooling a struggling learner or have been homeschooling for years, whether you now suspect learning problems or have known about them for years, this workshop is for you. |
| Bruce Eagleson | Radical Homeschooling (EH3) |
| Don't settle for school at home. Learn how (and why) to disciple your children 24/7. Learn how to get started. Learn the background that will help you to stand against the inevitable storms. This presentation builds the basis for Christian home based discipleship (often called Christian homeschooling). It is the foundation for the next talk in the series: The Nitty Gritty of Homeschooling in Pennsylvania. Attendance counts toward the beginning homeschooling track. |
| Megg Kanoff | Principles to Help Strengthen the Homeschool Decision/Vision (EH4) |
| God's Word gives us principles to follow in our daily walk with Him. Megg will look at some of these principles that can be applied to building a strong homeschooling foundation that can stand against the test of time. |
Friday 1:00 - 1:45 |
| Mary Schofield | Designing a Course of Study (Eq Arena) |
| Setting up your own course of study means that you make the decision about what to study and when. Home education provides the perfect opportunity to individualize our programs to match our students, our families, our schedules, our teaching styles, and our lifestyles. In this workshop, we will discuss ways to make the most of home education's flexibility, while ensuring that our children receive the best education available. |
| Jim Mason | Parental Rights: It's Now Or Never (Eq Barn) |
| Hear how the Supreme Court and our nation's lower courts are failing to hold parental rights to the same legal standard as fundamental rights like speech and press, and how European court decisions on children's rights are influencing our U.S. judicial system. Jim Mason describes three threats to parental rights that involve the political right, political left, and international law, and proposes a solution that will be the battle of the century for home schoolers and other pro-family forces. |
| Jay Wile | What about K-6 Science? (EH1) |
| Homeschooling parents are faced with a dizzying array of choices when it comes to teaching science at the elementary level. In this seminar, Dr. Jay L. Wile, a former teacher at both the high school and university levels, helps parents make sense of it all. He discusses the two major approaches to teaching the sciences, giving the strengths and weaknesses of each. He then surveys the major curriculum choices available to homeschoolers in order to help parents focus on what will work for their children. At the same time, however, Dr. Wile attempts to add perspective to the issue. He makes it clear that while teaching science at the elementary level is important, there are other subjects upon which an elementary-level education should focus. |
| Maggie Hogan | Classical Composers: Music History for the Musically Challenged (EH2) |
| This is a fast, fun, integrated approach to history and music for those of us who never learned this stuff. Knowing something about classical music is important for a well-rounded education. But it had better be interesting or the kids will snooze! Hear tidbits about famous composers and see a cool method of remembering who composed when. A list of important composers, their place in history, and more will be on hand-outs. |
| Nada Rothgaber | The Nitty Gritty of Homeschooling in PA (EH3) |
| Journey down the path of answering "what I must do when" or otherwise known as meeting the requirements of homeschooling in Pennsylvania. Nada will also give hints and tips on types of curriculum, keeping records, organizing the home and the day, educational field trips, and more! |
| Hannah Eagleson | What's the Trivium? Basics of Classical Homeschooling (EH4) |
| What if you could teach your children three basic "tools of learning" that would make every other subject far easier? This workshop discusses the basic tools of classical education and offers ideas for integrating them across the curriculum. |
Friday 2:00 - 2:45 |
| Richard "Little Bear" Wheeler | Battle of Monongahela: Lessons in Divine Providence (Eq Arena) |
| What would you think if I told you that when George Washington was twenty-one years old, he had two horses shot from under him, five bullets pass through his coat, one through his hat, and yet escaped unharmed while his companions were being leveled all around him? Did you ever have a school teacher tell you that George Washington was a committed Christian, and that he believed that Divine Providence protected him in battle? "Little Bear" helps to set the record straight. The purpose of this message is to reveal and acknowledge the wonderful works of God in the critical, as well as personal events all throughout the course of history, so that we may fulfill the commission—That the generation to come might know... and declare them to their children" (Psalm 78:6). |
| Bruce Shortt | Slaying the Government School Goliath: How Homeschoolers Can Help Restore our Culture (Eq Barn) |
| In 1960 no one would have predicted that the most significant development in education over the next 50 years would be homeschooling. Today, Christian homeschooling families are the key to revival and the recovery of America's historic Christian culture. Come hear some practical suggestions about how your family can contribute to this vital work. |
| Rick and Marilyn Boyer | Raising Cain - And Abel (A Look at Sibling Rivalry) (EH1) |
| Scripture records the stories of several cases of strife between siblings. In almost every case, there is a principle involved which the parents have violated, sowing destruction in their family. This series of case studies gives valuable insight into the causes - and therefore, the cures - of sibling rivalry. |
| Woody Robertson | Study Like a Genius: Unlocking Your Brain (EH2) |
| All learning is founded on one key—the ability to take in information and then remember it. Unfortunately, most students are never taught how to effectively learn. Each school year, students spend countless hours studying, only to have the information seemingly disappear when they need it most. In this interactive session, you will learn how to use study tools such as speed reading and memory techniques to increase your study potential many times over. Learn practical ways to implement memory tools such as the "peg" system in academics, work, or everyday life. The skills learned in this session will prove invaluable to parents and students alike. |
| Katherine Loop | Teaching Math Biblically: The Biblical Heart in Math (EH3) |
| Did you realize that your math book might be harming your child's heart? Although math is really a fascinating testimony to God's faithfulness and character, most homeschoolers are taught to view math as a neutral set of facts and numbers. Most parents are unaware of both the worldly thinking in typical math presentations and of God's presence in math. Discover the biblical truth about math - a truth that makes math come alive and gives math meaning. |
| Susan Kemmerer | Confessions of a Disorganized Homeschool Mom (EH3) |
| I always thought I was an organized person - until I had 9 kids and homeschooled. Now I am faced with the humiliating truth. I am a messy! However, I have learned a number of tricks to make homeschool run more smoothly. I'll share with you my daily log ideas, my multilevel teaching ideas, and my daily "schedule." A fun workshop for the organizationally challenged. |
| Diana Waring | YaGottaHavaGottaWanna (Teen Track) (VIP Room) |

Discover how it IS possible to eat an elephant through stories of how others have accomplished incredible feats. Inspiration from around the world, and also very practical advice on how to accomplish your dreams. |
Friday 3:00 - 3:45 |
| Doug Phillips | How to Think Like a Christian (Eq Arena) |
| Have you ever wondered if there is a distinctively Christian approach to teaching math, grammar, history, etc.? Doug answers these and similar questions in this important introduction to Christian apologetics and the true meaning of a biblical worldview. This talk is appropriate for adults and high school students. It is especially important that home educators understand a Christian theory of knowledge and education if they hope to train their children to "take every thought captive to the obedience of Jesus Christ." Issues discussed include: Can academics be theologically neutral? What is the role of logic in a Christian worldview? Do facts speak for themselves? How may we defend the Bible? Lastly, how do we answer the problem of evil? |
| Stan John | A Blueprint for Change? - Returning to a Culture of Family (Eq Barn) |
| Throughout the last two years we have heard a cacophony of voices advocating for significant change in our nation. While we might agree things are not working well and that change is due, what kind of change do we really need? The world around us is crying out for healthy, long term family and marriage relationships. With hopes to encourage and inspire Home Educators, Stan John will lay out a vision for us to reach our culture and establish a "Culture of Family". |
| Jay Wile | "Teaching" the Junior High & High School Sciences at Home (EH1) |
| In this seminar, Dr. Jay L. Wile explains how any parent can help his or her children learn science at the upper levels. As a former university teacher and a former high school teacher, Dr. Wile has experienced first-hand the failure of our public school system. As a result, he is a staunch advocate of homeschooling a student all the way through the high school years. Dr. Wile agrees that most parents do not have the ability to teach the high school sciences at home, but he also contends that this is not a problem. By the time a homeschooled student reaches high school, he or she should have the ability to learn independently or with the help of another. Thus, Dr. Wile admonishes the parent to learn the subject right along with the student. With both the parent and the student helping each other learn, an upper level science experience can be equally rewarding for both! In order to help the homeschooling parent plan his or her science curriculum, Dr. Wile provides study timelines for both the science-oriented and the non-science-oriented student. In addition, he discusses the mathematical skills needed in order to maintain the proposed timeline. Finally, Dr. Wile discusses the curriculum that will make it possible for the homeschooling parent to provide a quality high school science education for his or her children. |
| Kathy Kuhl | Teaching Math to Struggling Learners (EH2) |
| How do you bear to tackle math facts again, when your child didn't get them for the last four years? How can you move beyond them when your child has not mastered them? Or what if your child was fine with math, until reaching algebra? What are your options for high school mathematics? What are math disabilities? Veteran homeschool mother and math teacher Kathy Kuhl discusses working with children with math disabilities in the homeschool. |

| Mary Schofield | Designing Courses for Junior High and High School (Eq Arena) |
| Once decisions have been made about what to require for high school graduation, once the overall plan has been set, there is still much to do. How do you set up each course? Courses can be designed or modified by using pre-packaged curricula, by using a variety of materials you already have on hand, or byoutlining the course and finding materials to fit your needs. We will discuss these methods of course planning, and will also cover grading, keeping track of assignments with no stress, and record keeping. |

In this session, parents will: Discover how to become a counselor or coach instead of a policeman when helping children deal with anger. Reduce the frequency and intensity of anger episodes in their home. Learn practical and productive ways to teach children to manage their anger. |
| Rick Boyer | Making Learning Fun (EH1) |
| Thomas Edison was one of the greatest geniuses our country ever produced. Part of the reason for his brilliance was the fact that, after attending school for only three months, he was educated at home by his mother, who believed that learning can be fun. Her philosophy paid off, as it has for thousands of other home educators who have broken free from bondage to the "institutional" approach and returned to natural, sensible ways of teaching. Stop making a school of yourself! This workshop gives eight simple suggestions that can revolutionize your child's learning and make home education fun for the whole family. |

| Richard "Little Bear" Wheeler | George Washington - First in His Class: The Beginning of Wisdom (Eq Arena) |

On the contrary, this is a lesson in how one of our country's greatest leaders learned the beginning lesson of wisdom—a respectful fear of the Lord—and how it produced a lifetime of service to his country. In dramatic presentation in full Colonial array, evangelist/historian Richard "Little Bear" Wheeler will spotlight the life of George Washington, as the "First in His Class—The Class of 1776." |

| Mary Schofield | Choosing Curriculum for Junior and Senior High School (EH1) |
| Selecting curriculum for the upper grades can become a real nightmare. On the one hand, many materials seem designed for a classroom setting with expensive equipment required, and on the other hand, homeschool-designed materials vary so widely in ability level (for both students and teachers) that it is hard to know what will work. Parents often wonder if they need an advanced degree to teach advanced courses, or if "throwing money" at a difficult subject will help, or if materials they like are too basic to count for high school. In this session, we will focus on resources for a variety of subjects that almost any family can use, and will discuss ways to evaluate the myriad of texts and programs available. |

Saturday 11:00 - 11:45 |
| Doug Phillips | Providence and Perseverance: God's Message of History to Our Children (Eq Arena) |
| This present generation lacks hope. Our children don't know who they are, where they came from, nor where they should be going. Psalm 78 reminds us that God has ordained the telling of providential history to children as a primary means of communicating hope to the next generation. Doug Phillips explains the doctrine of Providence and the legacy of faithful believers who have persevered. He provides parents with a practical defense of providential history against the liberal revisionists of our day and inspires home educators to make the discipline of providential history a core element of their home education. |
| Stan John | The Truth Project Session 2: The Divine Imprint (Eq Barn) |

| Jay Wile | The Earth: Is It Young or Is It Old? (EH1) |
| In this seminar, Dr. Jay L. Wile, a nuclear chemist, discusses the age of the earth. The majority of scientists contend that the earth is several billions of years old. In this lecture, however, Dr. Wile demonstrates that this scientific consensus is not based on evidence. By providing detailed critiques of modern dating methods, he clearly shows that science does not point to an ancient earth. Dr. Wile's discussion of this point is particularly important, as his Ph.D. studies in nuclear chemistry were done at one of the United States' premiere radiometric dating laboratories. His knowledge of radiometric dating and how it is used is first-hand, and he can easily show that it simply DOES NOT work! Dr. Wile does not stop there, however. He also gives what he considers to be the main scientific reasons to believe that the earth is young. |

| Doug Phillips | Toxic: Seven Poisons Which Threaten the Health of the Homeschool Movement—and Their Antidotes (Eq Arena) |
| For more than a quarter of a century the modern Homeschool movement has been the subject of God's favor and blessing. Birthed out of a principled desire to return education to its biblical foundations, and to encourage family revival and multigenerational faithfulness, the homeschool movement persevered through numerous trials only to emerge as one of the most hopeful and encouraging movements within the Church. But as we approach the second decade of the 21st Century, the Homeschool movement now finds itself at a cross roads. Dangerous influences have emerged which threaten to undermine the coherence, purity, and significance of the Homeschool vision. | In this seminar, Dr. Wile discusses the facts related to the global warming debate that is currently raging in America. Dr. Wile does not engage in the emotional hysteria that typically surrounds this topic. Instead, he gives a cool, scientific appraisal of the environmental situation today and shows that, in fact, the global warming "crisis" is mostly an invention of extremists, not the consensus of the scientific community. There will also be a Question and Answer time for the audience to ask questions and to glean from the information sharing of the successes of the other audience members who have been blessed with "just one" child or, as their children grow and graduate, find they are down to the last child and it is now a different ball game to cope with teaching just one child. |

| Richard "Little Bear" Wheeler | You're In God's Army: Don't Go AWOL (Eq Arena) |
| As a Christian leader, the Apostle Paul commissions his spiritual son, Timothy, to think of himself, not as a civilian, but rather as a soldier in active service for Christ. It could be said that Christ is the Commander-in-Chief of an "all-volunteer army," and He wants you to be on "active duty" for His kingdom. However, we face an enemy of our souls who desires the most dedicated of Christian leaders to lose heart in the battle, to lose sight of the mission, and to go AWOL from serving the Lord and His people. For inspiring examples of good soldiers who stood their ground in the battlefields of life, evangelist/historian Richard "Little Bear" Wheeler draws upon reinforcements throughout history who fought the good fight of faith, who secured the high ground of principles, who finished strong, and heard it said, "Mission accomplished! Well done thou good and faithful servant!" |

He then presents strong scientific evidence that discounts the theory of evolution. He discusses evolutionists' attempts to explain away these data and how such attempts fail. Perhaps the most intriguing part of this seminar comes when Dr. Wile details some of the fantastic life forms on this planet and how their existence can never be explained using the hypothesis of evolution. Regardless of how science-oriented you are, this seminar will strengthen your faith and give you an even deeper appreciation for the marvelous Creation that God has given us. |
